The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has announced a bold economic projection, stating that Nigeria is on track to surpass Algeria and become Africa’s third-largest economy by Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2025.
This follows a remarkable 38% surge in Nigeria’s GDP, driven by growth across key sectors including agriculture, telecommunications, digital services, and manufacturing. According to the NOA, the economic momentum suggests that Nigeria could leapfrog Algeria in the continental GDP rankings within the next year.
“This is not just a number; it’s a reflection of the renewed confidence in Nigeria’s economic direction and the effectiveness of ongoing reforms,” said NOA Director-General, Dr. Lanre Issa-Onilu. He added that the agency is working closely with other government bodies to ensure that the growth is inclusive and sustainable.
Currently, Nigeria sits behind South Africa, Egypt, and Algeria in terms of GDP. However, with rising investor confidence, improved revenue generation, and a booming youth-driven tech ecosystem, the outlook appears increasingly optimistic.
The agency also urged Nigerians to continue supporting local industries and government policies aimed at driving economic self-reliance and stability.
If the projections materialize, Nigeria’s advancement to the third-largest economy in Africa will mark a significant milestone in its path toward economic transformation and regional influence.
